The Source Library is the public registry behind PlantLightIndex plant-light and fixture records. It includes peer-reviewed studies, university extension publications, botanical institutions, government records, professional horticultural references and manufacturer product pages. Each source keeps its publisher, URL, source class, access date and a short note explaining why it matters.
The library is not a generic bibliography. Its purpose is provenance. A source becomes more useful when a reader can see which plant profiles, fixture records or measurement points use it. The interactive list therefore shows usage counts and links back to the relevant PlantLightIndex entities.
PlantLightIndex treats a measurement as an observation, not automatically as a recommendation. A PPFD reading taken at a leaf tells you how much photosynthetically active photon flux reached that position at that moment. A published greenhouse treatment tells you what researchers supplied under a particular experiment. A photosynthetic light-saturation point describes a physiological response. A practical indoor reference is an editorial recommendation intended to help a houseplant grower make a decision. Those records can inform one another, but they are not interchangeable.
This distinction prevents a common failure in plant-light advice. A plant may survive under a very low PPFD treatment while growing slowly or changing form. Another study may show photosynthesis continuing to increase until a much higher PPFD. Neither number, by itself, proves that the lower value is ideal or that the higher value should be used in a home. PlantLightIndex therefore stores measurement context, evidence scope, source type and recommendation status alongside the number.
Some plant profiles contain a practical numerical PPFD range. Others show only a parent-species or genus reference. Some remain qualitative because a defensible species- or cultivar-specific numerical target has not been established in the sources reviewed for the site. That unevenness is intentional. A database becomes less useful when every empty field is filled with a plausible-looking number.
When a value is absent, the site should explain what is known instead. A page may state that a plant is commonly described by an extension source as preferring bright indirect light, or that a cultivar has demonstrated a different physiological response from its green parent, without converting those statements into a precise household target. The calculators then change behavior according to the record: full, contextual or qualitative.
Plant-light advice is easy to copy and difficult to trace. A blog may repeat a PPFD range without revealing whether it came from a controlled study, a manufacturer chart or another blog. PlantLightIndex tries to shorten that chain. Taxonomy is tied to botanical institutions where possible. Practical indoor categories use university extension guidance where suitable. Physiological claims use peer-reviewed research. Fixture specifications use the manufacturer because the manufacturer is the primary source for its own model data.
This does not make every primary source equally strong for every claim. Manufacturer measurements are commercial. Extension guidance can be broad. Research context can differ from a living room. The methodology records those limitations rather than using the word “source” as a blanket quality label.
Manufacturer pages and extension pages can change. PlantLightIndex records the date a source was accessed so a later discrepancy can be investigated. This is especially important for grow lights, where a product name may continue while specifications, regional variants or published PPFD charts change.
An access date is not a claim that the source was published on that date. Publication year is stored separately when known. For evergreen web guidance with no clear publication year, the year can remain null.
The short note attached to each registry record describes why PlantLightIndex uses the source. It is not intended to replace reading the original. A note such as “physiological light-response curves; not a direct household care prescription” signals both the value and the boundary of that evidence.
Users can open the source directly from the library. Plant profiles also show a small set of key supporting sources near the evidence-method block so the most important provenance is visible without scrolling through the full registry.
PlantLightIndex does not average conflicting claims automatically. The editor first checks whether the sources actually refer to the same taxon, product revision, distance, dimmer setting and measurement context. A conflict may disappear once those variables are separated. If it does not, the record can remain provisional, contextual, qualitative or conflicted.
Conflicts are especially important in cultivar taxonomy and product specifications. Preserving them may make the database look less complete, but it is safer than producing a false consensus.
The downloadable CSV files expose source identifiers alongside recommendations and fixture measurements. That means a user can filter or analyze the data without losing provenance. The identifiers can then be looked up in this library to reach the original publication.
This source-linked design is more useful than a CSV containing numbers alone. A range can only be evaluated properly when the reader knows whether it is exact-species evidence, broader context, a physiology benchmark or a manufacturer measurement.
These steps mirror the site's own methodology.
The registry contains sources currently used by the published database. It is not a claim to list every paper ever written about indoor plant light. A source can be added when it supports an entity, measurement, taxonomy assertion or methodology decision. Irrelevant citations are not added simply to make the bibliography longer.
If you notice a source mismatch or a newer primary record that materially changes a published value, use the contact page and include the plant or fixture name plus the source URL.
A source can be excellent for one purpose and irrelevant for another. Kew can resolve a scientific name without telling a user how many photons a mature plant needs. A physiology paper can measure light response precisely without giving household placement advice. A manufacturer can document a model's PPF while providing no usable distance curve.
The library therefore exposes source class and usage rather than publishing a simplistic star rating. The evidence-confidence layer evaluates the source in relation to a specific claim.
Several websites can repeat the same original chart or recommendation. Counting each repetition as independent agreement would overstate confidence. PlantLightIndex aims to trace claims back toward the primary publication or authoritative institution when possible. Derivative pages can still be useful for discovery, but they should not inflate the evidence count.
This is especially important in grow-light data, where retailers often copy a manufacturer's specifications. The manufacturer page remains the primary product source unless an independent test actually measures the fixture.
Web sources can move or disappear. The source ID remains stable even if a URL must be updated to a new canonical location. Notes and access dates help determine whether a broken link represents a moved page, an obsolete product revision or a source that should be archived.
For peer-reviewed research, DOI or publisher identifiers can be added in future schema versions where available. The current registry keeps the exact URL used during research so the provenance chain remains clear.
A new source should support a real plant identity, evidence observation, fixture specification, measurement point or methodology decision. It should have a clear publisher and URL, and its class should describe the nature of the source. Adding citations solely to make a page look heavily referenced is not part of the method.
Once added, the source can be connected to multiple evidence records without duplicating the source object. This keeps provenance normalized and lets the public library show where one publication influences several profiles.
A usage count shows whether a source supports one narrow record or influences several parts of the database. A taxonomy reference may appear across one plant profile, while a general extension lighting guide can support several practical classifications. Fixture manufacturer pages usually connect to one product family and its measurement points.
Counts do not make a source more authoritative. They simply reveal its footprint, which helps users identify high-impact references worth reviewing carefully.
Traditional bibliographies usually flow in one direction: article to source. PlantLightIndex also supports the reverse direction: source to plant or fixture. That makes it easier to audit how one publication is being interpreted across the site. If a source is updated or corrected, editors can identify every affected entity.
This reverse mapping is generated from taxonomy source IDs, evidence records, fixture source IDs and measurement records rather than maintained as a separate manual list.
Readers can use the same checklist when reviewing a source before relying on it for their own plant-light decisions.
A public plant page does not need to display every source connected to the database record in the main reading flow. The evidence block surfaces the most decision-relevant sources, while the Source Library exposes the full registry. This keeps pages readable without hiding provenance.
When several sources support the same idea, preference should go to the primary publication or authoritative institution rather than a long list of derivative pages. When sources support different aspects of the record, such as taxonomy, practical placement and physiology, showing more than one can help the reader understand why the recommendation has multiple layers.
Outbound links should remain contextual. A source link belongs near the claim or in the evidence block because it helps the user verify something. Adding unrelated authority links solely to meet an SEO quota would weaken the purpose of the library.
As more users arrive from search, a numerical range may be copied into notes, forum posts or other websites without its original explanation. Clear source links and evidence labels reduce the chance that PlantLightIndex becomes another untraceable endpoint in that chain. A reader can always move back from the published claim to the source that informed it.
This transparency also makes corrections easier. When readers challenge a value, the discussion can focus on the exact publication, plant identity and claim type rather than on vague disagreement between care websites.
