Confidence is about the evidence behind a claim
A High, Medium or Limited confidence label does not mean PlantLightIndex is assigning a probability that a plant will thrive. It describes how strongly the current evidence supports the specific recommendation or fixture interpretation shown on the site. The label helps users distinguish a direct species-level practical reference from a broader contextual range or a sparse fixture curve.
Confidence is intentionally separate from the numerical value. A range of 150–250 PPFD can appear as a strong species reference for one record and only as genus-level context for another. The numbers can be identical while the evidential meaning is different.
Measured values, estimates and recommendations are different things
PlantLightIndex treats a measurement as an observation, not automatically as a recommendation. A PPFD reading taken at a leaf tells you how much photosynthetically active photon flux reached that position at that moment. A published greenhouse treatment tells you what researchers supplied under a particular experiment. A photosynthetic light-saturation point describes a physiological response. A practical indoor reference is an editorial recommendation intended to help a houseplant grower make a decision. Those records can inform one another, but they are not interchangeable.
This distinction prevents a common failure in plant-light advice. A plant may survive under a very low PPFD treatment while growing slowly or changing form. Another study may show photosynthesis continuing to increase until a much higher PPFD. Neither number, by itself, proves that the lower value is ideal or that the higher value should be used in a home. PlantLightIndex therefore stores measurement context, evidence scope, source type and recommendation status alongside the number.
Missing evidence stays visible
Some plant profiles contain a practical numerical PPFD range. Others show only a parent-species or genus reference. Some remain qualitative because a defensible species- or cultivar-specific numerical target has not been established in the sources reviewed for the site. That unevenness is intentional. A database becomes less useful when every empty field is filled with a plausible-looking number.
When a value is absent, the site should explain what is known instead. A page may state that a plant is commonly described by an extension source as preferring bright indirect light, or that a cultivar has demonstrated a different physiological response from its green parent, without converting those statements into a precise household target. The calculators then change behavior according to the record: full, contextual or qualitative.
The five dimensions used for plant evidence

The score is an internal decision aid, not a published scientific statistic. Editorial review can override a mechanical total when the score hides an important context problem. For example, an exact-cultivar tissue-culture experiment may be precise but still poorly matched to a mature houseplant recommendation.
Source authority is not enough by itself
Peer-reviewed research generally deserves high source-quality weight, but a paper can answer a different question from the user's. A photosynthetic response curve can establish a saturation benchmark without defining the best decorative-houseplant setting. University extension guidance can be especially valuable for practical indoor placement because its intent is closer to household horticulture, even when it is less experimentally detailed.
Botanical institutions are strong sources for accepted taxonomy. Government patent records can establish cultivar naming history. Manufacturers are primary sources for their own product specifications. The source class therefore interacts with the claim being supported.
Exact cultivar evidence versus parent or genus context
Taxon specificity prevents evidence from drifting across related plants. Exact-cultivar evidence is ideal when the study matches the marketed cultivar. Exact-species evidence can support species recommendations. Parent-species or genus evidence may still be useful when cultivar data are scarce, but it receives a different evidence scope and cannot be presented as if the exact cultivar had been tested.
This is why the site has contextual calculator mode. Context does not mean useless. It means the result should be interpreted as a broader reference while the exact target remains unresolved.
Direct quantitative evidence
Numerical PPFD, DLI, photoperiod and fixture measurements are easier to compare than phrases such as low light or bright indirect light. Direct numbers therefore strengthen evidence. Yet numeric precision does not automatically equal recommendation quality. The number must still describe the right plant, claim and environment.
A low-light survival trial can report PPFD to two decimal places and still be a poor basis for an ornamental target. PlantLightIndex preserves those observations as evidence records while marking them unusable for the practical recommendation when appropriate.
Independent agreement
Agreement becomes stronger when independent sources using different methods point toward a compatible practical interpretation. Agreement is weaker when multiple pages simply repeat the same source or manufacturer chart. PlantLightIndex therefore treats source identity and provenance as important, not merely the number of citations attached to a page.
Disagreement is not hidden. It can lower confidence, trigger contextual status or leave a field null until the conflict is understood. The source library makes competing records inspectable.
Household relevance
PlantLightIndex is primarily a houseplant-light product. Evidence measured on mature indoor plants therefore has different practical relevance from tissue culture, seedling production or outdoor full sun. Greenhouse studies can still be highly informative, but the page should tell the user that the environment differs.
Household relevance also matters for fixtures. A numerical manufacturer PPFD point can be directly relevant to a home grow-light setup if the model, distance and dimmer setting are clear. A PPF specification without spatial data is useful for fixture identity but cannot support a leaf-level distance match.
What High, Medium and Limited mean
High
High confidence indicates strong support for the way the value is currently being used. It usually combines authoritative sources, good taxon or product match, numerical evidence and relevant context. It still does not mean the range is a universal optimum.
Medium
Medium confidence means the evidence is useful but contains an important limitation: sparse measurements, contextual scope, incomplete agreement or a practical interpretation that relies partly on broader guidance.
Limited
Limited confidence means users should treat the information primarily as orientation. A precise target may be withheld entirely. For fixture curves, limited confidence can reflect wide interpolation between only two points.
Confidence can change as the database improves
A record is not permanently assigned to one confidence level. New cultivar research, independent PPFD maps, better taxonomic resolution or stronger household studies can change the evidence. The version-controlled data files make those changes traceable in the project history, while the user-facing page always reflects the current reviewed record.

How users should act on confidence
High confidence supports a stronger starting decision, but users should still measure their actual environment and observe plant response. Medium confidence should encourage closer measurement and conservative adjustments. Limited evidence should push the user toward measurement, gradual acclimation and avoiding claims that the database itself does not make.
The confidence label is therefore not decoration. It changes the language, calculator behavior and recommended next step.
